2-23-13 Wild Women Recite! reading info

Airlie Press and River Gallery present the 12th Annual Wild Women, Recite! reading.

On Saturday, Feb. 23, Stephanie Lenox and Maren Anderson will read from their work as the central event of the ongoing Wild Women show at the River Gallery.

Doors open at 7:00 pm. Reading starts at 7:30 pm.
River Gallery
184 S. Main St., Independence, OR
Light refreshments, no cover.
The reading will be followed by an open mic and book signing.

Stephanie Lenox is a Salem poet whose book Congress of StrangePeople (Airlie Press, 2012) includes a section of poems based on the “federation of freaks,” the group of humans born into the world with a variety of highly obvious abnormal physical characteristics, who are often condemned to earn their living by exploiting these features. With delicate tact and enormous craft, Stephanie places these poems side by side with character sketches and stories from her own family, and arrives at the “congress of strange people” that, in the end, includes us all.
Maren Bradley Anderson teaches literature and writing at Western Oregon University and raises alpaca in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Her most recent work is the novel Liz A. Stratton Closes the Store: A Novel about Sex and Politics. With wit and passion, Maren modernizes the ancient Greek tale of Lysistrata, transposing it into the story of one Liz A. Stratton, who finds herself running for president, promoting her feminist strategy for ending war, and trying to deal with a budding romance of her own.

Maren's 2012 Recap

This year (2012) has been a good year for me as a writer.

I self-published my novel in print, I taught three novel-writing classes, I started an editing business, plus I completed two drafts of one novel and began another. I estimate that I wrote 150,000 words this calendar year alone.

Holy crap, that’s a lot of words.

I’ve made money teaching the classes and editing, but I am also in the black from selling my books, which makes me inordinately happy. It is lots more fun for me to make money selling my book or teaching people how to write their novels than it is making money teaching quasi-resentful freshmen how to write a research paper. Go figure.

I had a reading at WOU which was standing-room only. I have also been invited to be a featured reader at Wild Women Recite! on February 23, 2013,  a yearly reading at a local gallery that is always well-attended by local literati.

I’ve got one novel that I am submitting, one that is being read by an alpha reader, and a nearly-completed manuscript. The books are all in different genres: rural fantasy, straight-up romance, and “monster in the house.” I don’t have plans for my next project, but I am not lacking in ideas, and I’m not afraid of different genres, either.

Like I said, 2012 was a good writing year for me. I think I crossed over into that “serious writer” category; at least, it feels like I did. If I keep it up, someone will surely take notice and offer me a giant pile of money and fame, and Jon Stewart and Brian Williams will arm wrestle over who gets to interview me first. Right? Right?

Here’s to a productive 2013.

Nanowrimo Again!

I forget if this is my third or fourth Official #Nanowrimo. I am starting my fourth novel this year, though, and all but one of my novels began life as a book in a month challenge.

I never finished a manuscript until I found Nano. Weirdly, I also never finished a manuscript until I had a baby. Mostly, the baby taught me how precious little time I really have, and Nano taught me how to use every  scrap of time well.

So, thanks to my babies and thanks to Nanowrimo.org for making me into a novelist.

Couldn't have done it without y'all.

October 27 book signing

I was a late addition, so I'm not on the poster, but I'll be signing books at Rick's place cafe in Monmouth from 2-4 pm.

I hope to see you all there.
